WHO declared the ongoing mpox outbreak in Africa a global health emergency

On August 14, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the ongoing mpox outbreak in Africa a global health emergency.

According to a WHO report, there has been a recent surge in mpox cases in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and other African countries. Also, a new variant of the mpox virus has started spreading to neighboring nations.

In response, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, under the International Health Regulations (2005) (IHR), has declared the situation a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC).

According to Africa CDC, since the beginning of this year and as of July 28 2024, a total of 14,250 cases (2,745 confirmed; 11,505 suspected) and 456 deaths (CFR: 3.2%) of mpox have been reported from 10 African Union Member States (AU MS).

Mpox is a viral infection caused by the monkeypox virus, a double-stranded DNA virus with an envelope, which used to be predominantly endemic in West and Central Africa and can cause flu-like symptoms and pus-filled lesions. While usually mild, it can be fatal. The virus spreads through close contact, including sexual contact.
